The natural state possess an inherent balance, however. Some forms of expanding specialization require increasing the degree of entry, openness, and access in the economic system. This, in turn, reduces rents, which may threaten the stability of the entire social order. The natural state therefore involves a tradeoff: the gains from greater specialization must be balanced against the threat of disorder. This tradeoff is why the natural state is a limited access social order. Specialization and division of labor is good for the dominant coalition, but only up to the point where specialization and division of labor erodes the fundamental source of social stability and limits on violence.
